The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has announced revised insurance requirements for its Recognised Training Centres (RTCs).  The changes include raising the minimum indemnity level of Public Liability Insurance  from £2m to £3m.

Of more significance is the requirement that RTCs should have a minimum of £500k Professional Indemnity.  This is significant because such cover is not normally provided as an integral component of combined Marine Trades insurance policies which means clubs may have to look for solutions away from their traditional insurance provider.

Professional Indemnity Insurance is designed to protect entities in respect of any design or advice they provide – cover that is almost invariably excluded on traditional Marine Trades policies.  Premiums for this type of cover can be comparatively expensive due its restricted appeal to the insurance markets so it will be interesting to see how the Professional Indemnity Insurance Market responds to this new demand.
